| Peninsula Aikido Scholarship Fund |
| Located in North Portland, our program focuses on low-income, at-risk high school students. We partner with school counselors and teachers to reach out to students at the first signs of the at-risk cycle— indicators can include difficulties at home, social isolation, diminishing school performance and declining physical activity. The fund provides students with an initial three-month program, consisting of three after-school classes a week. There is no cost to the student for this portion. After completing the initial three months, students may apply for a continuing six-month program. We offer a half- scholarship for this program, with the student paying twenty dollars a month toward their tuition. We feel that this gives students a greater sense of ownership in their Aikido training. They can continue to apply for ongoing scholarships every six months. Students who cannot afford this, may participate in a work-study program in which they can do chores, or help in the children's class. No teen is ever turned away because they cannot pay. |
